Enter the studio with Matt Schaeffer, recording and mixing engineer for Kendrick Lamar since 2014. In this series, we explore the multi-track mix session of ‘All the Stars’ by Lamar & SZA, a song from the 2018 blockbuster movie ‘Black Panther’. Schaeffer outlines the recording and production process of the track, yet focusses primarily on the techniques used in his fully ‘In The Box’ mix. He discusses monitoring, metering, level calibration, headroom, analog summing emulation, microphones, the benefits of stacking compressors and de-essers, and much more. He also demonstrates how he duplicates beat tracks for sequential treatment, side-chain compresses the synth group, blends string overdubs, and – best of all – reveals every detail of his elaborate vocal chains for Kendrick and SZA!
